I've always thought of art as capturing something, be it beauty, emotion, or a memory. it does not matter whether this 'capturing' takes a few minutes -a quick sketch or indeed a photograph- or a few weeks/months/years -a painting or a sculpture. Besides, someone who is serious about photography will rarely be spontaneous; a lot of thought and care goes into a composition, not to mention the technical aspects such as lighting, aperture and shutterspeed (which we are learning about now at ews). Those 'wow' photographs we see in magazines and exhibitions don't just 'happen'!!!
Well if photography wasn't art, why would we all be so fascinated by it? We are all amazed at how people take photos that take our breath away, so how could you not call that art. It's not easy and effortless, yes sometimes the perfect photo may have just 'happened' BUT they've thought about what type of photo they wanted before hand. It's trial and error a lot of the time. But saying photography is too instant and effortless is ridiculous.
photography is art! photography involves angles, symmetry, composition, colour and tone which is what is needed in art. So photography is art.
